Alliance Pillar #1: Form

Sometimes, the form of alliance is an obvious choice, while other times you may need to consult colleagues, experts, and members of your management team to decide if one form is more strategically or tactically advantageous than another. The form is one of the six types of alliances—ad hoc, consortium, project joint venture, joint venture, merger, and acquisition.

Alliance Pillar #2: Risk

Throughout the process of building an alliance—from deciding on the form, selecting the ally, and developing the alliance—you must continually assess risk. The purpose of an alliance should always be to advance you or your organization further, faster, and/or more cost effectively than it can do on its own, but it can only serve this purpose if risks are mitigated. Ask yourself what the risks are for both parties and whether the alliance is worth the risk. When you answer these questions, be sure that outcomes will produce greater results than only the sum of the two parts.
